Copyright

New writers often ask about sending their work to a publisher or editor without a copyright.  They believe that without that protection their idea and work may be stolen.

To ease your mind we prepared these facts:

The minute you create your work you OWN the Copyright

Even incomplete work bears your copyright

You do not need to register, apply or publish in order to secure your copyright

Copyrights last until 70 years after your death—if two or more authors hold the copyright---it will be in force for 70 years after the death of the last surviving author

When you publish your work you can register your copyright with the U.S. Copyright office.  More information about Copyrights can be found at http://www.copyright.gov/

When sending out your work if you want to prove the date of creation – mail the work to yourself and do not open the envelope. The US Governments postmark verifies the date
